Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or — believed to flow through pathways or meridians in the body. By inserting several thin, sterile needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will be restored and dis-ease will be impacted. Acupuncture has been used for over 5000 years to treat a variety of conditions and is commonly used today to treat pain, to aid in managing stress, or for overall wellness.

Active Release Technique®

The initial acupuncture appointment includes a consultation and an acupuncture treatment. Many questions regarding your health history will be asked that aren’t often asked and may seem irrelevant to your main complaint, however Chinese medicine is a whole-body medicine. Your set of symptoms and how they present will help determine your treatment, the acupuncture points chosen, and the duration of your treatment course. Any questions or concerns can also be addressed during this time.

The initial consultation is generally 15-20 minutes, followed by a 30 minute acupuncture treatment. During your acupuncture treatment, you will remain mostly clothed. Wearing loose-fitting and comfortable clothing that can be moved, such as rolling up pant legs to under the knee, is usually how acupuncture points are accessed. One time use, sterile, stainless steel needles are carefully inserted, and you will relax on the table until your acupuncture treatment is done. Many people feel rejuvenated following a treatment. Once your treatment is complete, needles are properly disposed of, and you may go about your day as usual.

A few helpful tips for your initial appointment:

  • Make sure you set aside the appropriate time for your appointment. This allows for adequate time for both the consultation and treatment. Sometimes other modalities such as cupping may be used in addition to the acupuncture treatment.

  • Bring a list of your current medications and supplements.

  • Have a small snack before your appointment.

  • Avoid caffeine before your appointment so that relaxing is easier.

Corrective Exercise

Corrective exercise is a functional movement system that generally includes a series of specific exercises to aid in the rehabilitation and prevention of injuries to your major joints, such as the knee, ankle, hip, shoulder, etc… Your Upright Health provider will determine which exercises are appropriate for you, assist you with performing them correctly during your visit and educate you on how and when to perform them at home, for best results.

Cupping

Cupping involves placing a vessel on the skin and reducing the air pressure inside it either through the use of a hand pump or by heating the air with a fire source. This drop in air pressure pulls tissues into the cup which creates separation in the underlying tissues, potentially releasing adhesions within. Additionally, cupping draws blood into the underlying tissues which aids in muscle relaxation. We use both fire cupping and hand pump cupping in clinic and each offers a different experience.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is the practice of utilizing solid filiform medical-grade needles in order to reduce or eliminate muscular pain. These needles are solid, thus do not inject a solution; hence the name ‘dry’ needling. The needles are typically inserted into trigger points or knots within muscles with the goal of stimulating the tissues to relax or release. The duration of time the needles remain within the tissues is less than that of acupuncture.

Nutrition Counseling

What you put into your body on a daily basis can have a greater impact on your health than anything else you do. There are many myths, fads and just plain misinformation about food that make it difficult to really know what’s good for you and what’s not – and to make it even more complicated, that answer isn’t the same for everyone. Your Upright Health provider can help you develop (And stick to!) eating habits that will have a positive effect on your specific health goals.

Spinal Manipulation & Mobilization

Spinal manipulation and mobilization techniques are a non-invasive, therapeutic treatment for neck, back and extremity pain or discomfort, as well as osteoarthritis and migraines. Spinal Manipulation is the traditional high-velocity low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust that often results in an audible “pop,” as your provider uses their hands to apply controlled force to a specific joint, while the body is positioned in a specific way. Alternatively, Spinal Mobilization is a low-force or gentle chiropractic technique that can be applied after careful consideration of the patient’s pathology, size, comfort level, and/or preference.
